Millenial and Gen Z – Environmental Scuba Divers

Millenial and Gen Z – Environmental Scuba Divers

Millennials have been shaking things up since birth, and Gen Z is following right in their footsteps. Theyโ€™re not complacent. They don’t accept things as they are. They ask questions, probe deeper, and are more socially aware than any generation that came before them. Plus, theyโ€™re set to be the largest market in the diving industry, which will have heaps of positive effects on the magnificent oceans on our planet.

With Millenial and Gen Z personality traits comes ambition and drive to make the world a better place. One of the most pressing issues that has caught the attention of new generations is environmental protection and marine conservation. Young divers arenโ€™t just interested in getting underwater and looking at the fishes – they want to take their skills and training and do something positive with it! The 3W Tribe is here for it!

The Why – Marine Conservation is Vital to Save Our Planet

Considering they’ve grown up with twenty-four-seven access to the internet in the palm of their hands, these generations are not new to the issues that humans are facing (and causing). Young people around the globe aren’t just talking about the adverse effects that humans are having on the planet, but they’re demanding that change be made.
According to a study done by Pew Research, Millennial and Gen Z have the highest percentage of adults who want to make climate a top priority, who consider it their top personal concern, and who have personally taken action to address it.

It’s no surprise that divers also tend to care more about the planet than others. They get an up-close and personal view of what happens when people don’t care for our world. Bleached coral, whirlpools of garbage, and animals suffering from human carelessness – these things can be hard to witness. And even harder to stand by and do nothing.

However, protecting the ocean isn’t just about keeping garbage out of it. Healthy oceans can actually help reduce impacts from climate change. Oceans absorb carbon dioxide, distribute heat, and create more than half of the oxygen on Earth. In addition, they provide food and livelihood for millions of people. And, of course, they offer an enchanting and stunning underwater world to explore. To fully understand how to care for our oceans, it’s vital to understand the science and biology behind them.

The How – Donโ€™t Just Talk About It, Be About It

Young divers are eager to take their first breaths underwater, but they’re even more keen to understand marine ecology and how they can do their part. As a result, marine conservation classes and internships are becoming more and more popular, as they give new divers the education and skills to contribute positively.
The 3W Dive Tribe is just as pumped up on marine conservation as this young generation of divers and is stoked to offer a marine conservation internship to equip young divers with the knowledge and skills they’re looking for. The program focuses specifically on coral farming and restoration, a crucial part of marine ecology. Coral colonies provide a home to many species, protect the coastline from waves and floods, and filter the water. So basically, they’re not just a colorful playground. They’re super important for our planet’s health!
